Irving Texas

Originally founded as a watermelon farm, the Irving, Texas of today maintains a lifestyle as sweet and delightful as the fruit itself. This suburb encompasses 67 square miles outside of the thriving metropolis of Dallas. Its current population of around 192,000 is evenly divided between men and women, with a median age of 30 years old.

The entertainment and recreation options in Irving are diverse. On the first and third Saturdays of each month you can peruse the downtown Farmer's Market. This is a great opportunity to pick up some of the freshest produce and flowers, while spending some time people-watching. Nearby, you can stroll the Mandalay Canal Walk at Las Colinas, a gorgeous cobbled walkway shaded by trees and designed to resemble an old world European village. You'll want to bring your camera for the sculpture "Mustangs of Las Colinas". Nine bronze mustangs galloping through a granite stream were created by African wildlife sculptor Robert Glen. This impressive piece of work took over seven years to create, and is the largest equestrian sculpture in the world.

After visiting this impressive site, you may discover that you are a big fan of American art. If so, you won't want to miss the Amon Carter Museum, one of the leading collections of American and Western Art in the world. Here you can see permanent collections by such leading American artists as Winslow Homer and Georgia O'Keefe. At the Sid Richardson Museum, you can find more classic paintings by legendary Western artists Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell.

The region is additionally noted for being home to the two affluent communities of Valley Ranch and Las Colinas. The town of Las Colinas is an executive-style master planned community. At its focal point is its impressive Urban Center, containing nearly a thousand acres of commercial buildings, luxury hotels and a Venetian-style canal. In this area, you will find a number of chic boutiques and the famed Mustangs of Las Colinas equestrian sculpture. Houses in Las Colinas are truly dream homes, with significant architecture and impeccably manicured landscaping. This peaceful community offers a respite from the frenetic pace of professional life, and is an especially popular relocation destination for families.

The nearby community of Valley Ranch is an equally desirable location. With over four thousand single-family homes and twenty one apartment communities, housing options are diverse. The area's two public school systems are superb, and a source of great pride to residents. Folks here have access to every imaginable amenity and services, with several neighborhood shopping centers and a plethora of restaurants. Residents tend to spend their free time outdoors, taking advantage of the five miles of paved walkways that meander along the canal. Much of Valley Ranch's land has yet to be developed, leaving plenty of room for the expected influx of new residents as Valley Ranch continues to gain popularity.

Unique to Irving is the Las Colinas Movie Studio. This is the largest collection of sound stages between California and Florida. Such well-known movies as Robocop, JFK and Problem Child were filmed here. As a full-service motion picture facility, over 100,000 visitors pass through the gates each year. Thousands more attend black-tie events on the grounds to support charities and celebrate special occasions is settings ranging from "wild west" to old Hollywood glamor.

Families report that a must-see in the area is the National Scouting Museum. This is the official museum of the Boy Scouts of America. Anyone who has a Scout, or has ever been one, will want to visit this enormous tribute to scouting in America. There is truly something for each member of the family in this state of the art facility. From the Norman Rockwell gallery, historical collections, virtual reality adventures and hands-on exhibits, plan on staying the whole day.

Irving is proud to have the fourth largest convention and visitors bureau in the state of Texas. And this group has worked hard to bring top notch entertainment and events to the area. Thanks to their labor, Irving is now home to the PGA Tour's GTE Byron Nelson Classic. Here you will also be able to watch, or maybe even participate in, the Senior Tennis Tour and USTA sanctioned Irving Open tournament, one of the biggest draws for amateur tennis talent in the country.

Locals can drive into Dallas to catch year-round professional sporting events. Of course, Texans love their football, and turn out in droves to watch the Cowboys play at Texas Stadium. Another local favorite, the MLB Texas Rangers, draw equally big crowds during the summer. In the winter, fans can catch the NHL Stars at the Dr. Pepper Star Center. And one of Texas' newest teams, as well as one of the NBA's, the hard-playing Dallas Mavericks.
